Poker Run
The spring Poker Rally was held on a sunny and windy day Saturday April 12. A group of six teams showed up for some good fun and abuse, following the instructions of the rally masters Rob Green and Bill Van Moorhem. This event is a lot of fun as it provides a good opportunity to get in some spring driving, and tour some interesting parts of Salt Lake. It is also a opportunity for the Rally Masters to play a few tricks on the unwary drivers! Bill is especially good at delivering a rally instruction that has more than one meaning, and is diabolical in its syntax.

The object of this type of rally is to find all the destinations, and retrieve a envelope with a playing card in it. The instruction to the next rally destination is also on the envelope, so it is essential to find all the sites, in order. The trick is to plan a route that is both challenging enough to make find the sites interesting, yet simple enough to have most of the teams find all locations. This proved to be about what happened on this run, as some finished fast (seems that Gary regularly travels these areas, and picked up clues about as fast as we could lay them down!) and some took some time in figuring out the route. Team Hermance toured most of the lovely east side of the valley in their quest for cards. The winners, with the best Poker hand, were one of the last cars to arrive at the finishing picnic, Nick and Nicholas Nichols II. As Gary declared the game would be 5 card roll to beat (the showing hand), the tension built as the cards were turned going around the table, only to have the winning hand be a pair of 3s! A good time was had by all, and we look forward to running another poker rally next year.

Attending were: Gary Lindstrom, Jon & Susan Hermance, Pugs & Diane Pivirotto, Todd & Connie Pixton, Dana, Natalie, Rob & Nana Green, Elise Johnson, Jenny Barnes, and the winning duo honored above.

Think this run is easy? Here are the clues. See if you can figure out the location. (Answers at the back of the newsletter)
1. Go west young person and head to the most famous ice cream cone in Salt Lake City. It is a double dipper but would be hard to eat since it is so big and keeps turning around.
2. If you were one of the Mormon pioneers where would you encamp on the first night in the valley? On rocks? Was it 5/17 when they arrived?
3. Before the Mormon pioneers arrived the Donner-Reed party used the same route to immigrate (emigrate?), but got so tried of cutting oak brush that they pulled their wagons up the side of the canyon. Check out this location
4. Be on the lookout for old army tanks. Now where would you find a tank but at a fort, and remember it is an old tank.
5. On the way to lunch stop by the old stone wall surrounded by research buildings. This place looks like a park.
6. Head out to Sunnyside Ave. and turn east, then turn right just past the zoo parking lot, and head up the hill. Turn left onto Kennedy Dr. and follow it about a block or two. Stop at the picnic tables in the park.

Brits on the Bridge
The weather was picture perfect, although a bit breezy, for Brits on the Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. British car owners from all over the Western US were in attendance for the 3rd annual show put on by the Arizona MG Club. Saturday morning's events got under way with a Funkana with tests of skill such as balancing your car on a teeter-totter, driving a slalom blindfolded directed by your passenger, and guessing the width of your car by driving between two poles after you set the distance apart.

Saturday afternoon's event was a Poker Run through the desert to the historic mining town of Oatman, Arizona. Driving through the streets there was made more fun by the burros that walk through the streets seeking treats and attention.

The car show on Sunday ended early due to the high winds, but a nice selection of cars turned out. Mark and Joyce Noeltner were the only BMCU members to enter their car in the show and attracted a lot of attention with their DeLorean.

Club members Bill Robinson, Bill Walton, Simon Pipe, and Tim Furner were in Lake Havasu to see the sights and visit with Membership Director Bruce Schilling who has a boat on the lake. MG owner Peter Gordon also stopped by to visit Bruce.

Over the weekend Bruce took the folks listed above out on the lake for the island tour. The weather was beautiful and so was the scenery. Thanks to Bruce for the great rides!

Tinker Day
Saturday morning found a small gathering of enthusiasts at Robert Allred's house down in Riverton. Bob had shuffled some cars around in his garage to make room for the day's activities, but not too much tinkering actually occurred. Those who did show up spent some time admiring a few cars from Ed Oblad's Lotus collection, including an Elan coupe Bob was working on, the Caterham 7 autocross car, and an Elise just back from the recent IVR weekend at Wendover, sporting several new cone marks from a few laps done at full chat by a certain Spitfire racer, who had some trouble with the course markers.

Pugs Pivirotto rode down with Gary Lindstrom in the Jag, intent on assembling a Spitfire rear hub assembly. For want of a decent oil seal, that job went unfinished. Ryan Geertsen came down in a Triumph Spitfire in need of some attention, along with Randy Parker. Randy does own a British Car, a Healey 100-6, but drove down in a nice Corvette coupe. Mark Bradakis fussed with the distributor and the Weber DGV carb on Ryan's car, getting it to run and idle a bit better. Another half dozen or so watched the activities, offering advice, comments, observations and such. Larry Bishop motored down in a sharp looking Jaguar XJ12C, and mentioned he'll consider hosting the Fall Tinker Day. We'll see how it works out. In addition to those mentioned attendees were Todd Pixton, Wade Ashley and Jon Hermance.

Antelope Island Run
Saturday, May 10th
Join us for a run out to Antelope Island on Saturday, May 10th. This is a great run, especially that drive along the east side of the island over to the Garff ranch: the road has a few twists and turns that are ideal for our small sports cars.

Here’s the plan:
10:00 am: For those of you in the SLC area, we’ll gather at the state capitol, in the north side parking lot, at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 10. At 10:30, we’ll leave the capitol and head north, by way of Victory Road, and onto I-15 NB to Layton, where we’ll get off at exit 335 (Antelope Drive). Watch for the brown signs directing you to Antelope Island State Park.
11:00 am: If you live in Davis county, or other parts north of SLC, meet us behind the Burger King on the NW corner of the intersection of Antelope Drive and Main Street in Layton. That’s just past the second light west of I-15, and due west across the street from Kmart. If you left the house in a hurry and didn’t pack your lunch, this is an opportunity to buy something. There’s only one food establishment on the island, so it’s best to take a lunch with you.
11:30 am: We’ll head out to the island. If you don’t meet up with us at the Burger King in Layton, just remember that once you’re on Antelope Drive, stay on that road and head west until you reach the Great Salt Lake—you can’t miss it.

Once we’re on the island, we’ll head past the marina and the visitor’s center over to the west side, near the beaches, and eat lunch at the pavilions. After lunch, we’ll drive over to the Garff ranch. Along the way, keep a look out for buffalo, deer, and who knows..maybe even the island’s name-sake antelope. You’ll find that the ranch is a well-preserved example of a working ranch house, barns, and other outbuildings that were in use from the late 1800’s up until about 1980. It’s also an interesting history lesson about the island. After we tour the ranch, we’ll head home.

What to bring: You’ll want to bring a picnic lunch and drinks. Remember to bring $8
per car (let’s see how many people we can cram into our cars!) to cross the causeway to the island—that fee goes to Davis County to pay for the causeway maintenance. Also, it’s been known to rain on us, so don’t forget your rain jacket just in case!

If you need more information, call Nathan Massie at 801-486-2935, or call the Antelope Island information line at 801-773-2941.

So get that car ready….and see you on Saturday!

12TH Annual British Field Day
Saturday, June 7
It’s that time of year again for all British car and motorcycle enthusiasts to dust off their cars and bikes, tune them up, get them running again and out of the garage. All British cars and bikes in any condition, restored or under repair are welcome. This is not a car show strictly for flawless and gorgeous vehicles. So, if you’re thinking “my car isn’t in good enough shape”, think again. As long as you can get it there under its own power or by any other means, we’d love to have it included in the show. The more the merrier!

For the brave of heart, we will have the racecourse set up again this year on 3rd
South between 3rd and 4th West. During the event there will be music, laughter, car and bike shoptalk, food and British paraphernalia vendors and drawings for superb raffle prizes.

Proceeds from this event will be donated to The Center for Family Development. Since 1981, the Center for Family Development has helped more than 13,000 people significantly improve their ability to understand and effectively cope with abusive relationships. Every year more than 900 families or 3,000 individuals in Utah seek guidance from the Center. Seventy-five percent of the Center’s clients are family members directly affected by abuse. Through education and treatment, families and individuals can learn to avoid the repetitive cycles of abuse and put their lives back together.

So, please, help support us in this very worthwhile cause and get your cars and bikes out and come join the fun:

Filler
Little Billy and Daddy Walton were down at the autocross watching the MG’s zipping
through the cones. Little Billy looks up to his Dad and says, "Dad, when I grow up, I want to be a MG driver."
His Dad looks down at him and says, "You can't do both, son."

For those of you who have never had the pleasure of owning a British car, but want to know what it's like: Next big rainstorm, wait till dark, roll down all windows, leave off lights & heater and go for a drive. Stop at every intersection and throw out a twenty dollar bill. It's not exactly the same, but it's real close.
